The author presents a study of the \(L^2\) metric on the space \(M_n\) of rational maps of degree \(n\). Using a certain natural complex structure on \(M_n\), he proves that the metric is Kähler. For \(n=1\) he obtains explicit formulae for the metric and its holomorphic, sectional, Ricci and scalar curvatures. For this case he shows also that the space has finite volume and diameter and codimension 2 boundary at infinity. He analyzes also a certain class of Hamiltonian flows on \(M_1\). Finally, for a more general \(n\) he considers a certain geodesically incomplete submanifold of \(M_n\) and discusses its relevance to theoretical physics.
