    Let \(A\) be a positive self-adjoint operator on \(L^2(M)\), where \(M\) is a \(\sigma\)-finite measure space. It is shown that if \[ \| e^{-At}f\|_\infty\leq \phi(t)^{-1}\| f\|_1\quad\forall t> 0,\;\forall f\in L^1(M), \] where \(\phi\) is an incrasing \(C^1\)-diffeomorphism of \([0,+\infty)\) with subexponential growth, then a certain function of \(A\), namely, \[ \psi_\alpha(A)= \int^\infty_0 Ae^{-At}\phi(t)^\alpha\,dt\quad\forall \alpha> 0, \] is a bounded operator \(\psi_\alpha(A): L^p(M)\to L^q(M)\) for \(1< p< q< +\infty\). If \(p= 2\), a weak converse holds true. The paper includes a detailed discussion of the special case when \(\phi(t)= t^\mu\), \(0\leq t\leq 1/2\), and \(\phi(t)= e^{ct^\nu}\), \(t> 2\) (\(\mu\), \(c>0\), \(\nu\in (0,1)\)).
