This paper deals with the singular integral equation of Cauchy type \[ a(x) \varphi(x)+ {b(x)\over \pi} \int_J {\varphi(\tau)\over \tau-x}\, d\tau+ \lambda \int_J k(x,\tau)\varphi(\tau)\,d\tau= f(x),\tag{1} \] where the coefficients \(a\) and \(b\) satisfy \(| a(x)|+| b(x)|> 0\) on \(J= [-1,1]\), as well as some regularity conditions. A basic assumption is the negativity of the index associated to (1). Perturbed equations of (1) are also considered. The main results regard the stability of the solution in the class of solutions of perturbed equations. The presentation is rather technical and relies constantly on functional analytic methods.
