The authors study the moment map associated to a Killing vector field \(K\) on quaternionic-Kähler (q-K) manifolds \((M, g)\). In particular, they show that every Killing vector field on \((M, g)\) is Hamiltonian with respect to the fundamental 4-form \(\Omega\) of \((M, g)\), i.e. there exists a 2-form \(\rho\) such that \(i_K\Omega= d\rho\). By the moment map associated to the field \(K\) the authors mean the section \(P\) of the quaternionic bundle \(Q\subset\text{End}(TM)\) defined by the relation: \(\rho= g(., P)\). The energy is the function \(f= g(P, P)\). The authors study the critical points of \(f\) and the Hessian of \(f\). They prove that on every known non-flat homogeneous quaternionic-Kähler manifold there exists a Killing vector field \(K\) vanishing at the point \(p\) such that \(\text{Hess}_f\) has a split signature at \(p\) and that symmetric q-K manifolds admit Killing vector fields vanishing at \(p\) such that \(\text{Hess}_f\) is definite. Finally, they describe the class of very special real manifolds \(N\) and study the dressed moment map \(P: M\times N\to Q\) corresponding to the Lie algebra \(\gamma\subset{\mathfrak i}{\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak o}(M, g)\) spanned by \(\dim N+ 1\) Killing vector fields. The authors extend their investigation to this case also giving precise formulae for the Hessian \(\text{Hess}_f\) of the energy \(f\) of the dressed moment map \(P\). These results are related with BPS solutions of 5-dimensional supergravity which correspond to gradient flows on the product \(M\times N\) generated by the energy function \(f\) of the dressed moment map \(P\).
