A subspace \(Y\) of a topological space \(X\) is said to have the countable chain condition in \(X\) if the cardinality of every pairwise disjoint collection of open sets in \(X\), each member of which meets \(Y\), is at most countable. Relative versions of other chain conditions and calibres are defined similarly. The authors consider a relative version of a number of theorems on chain conditions. For example, in contrast to the well-known result that it is consistent and independent that the countable chain condition is preserved by products, the authors give ZFC examples of a pair \((X,Y)\) such that \(Y\) has the countable chain condition in \(X\) but \(Y^2\) does not have the countable chain condition in \(X^2\). The relationship among relative chain conditions, relative calibres, relative separability and cardinality is also investigated.
