Let \(M\) be a finite von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful normal tracial state \(\tau\), and let \((M_n)\) be an increasing filtration of von Neumann subalgebras. It is shown that the space BMO behaves much like \(L_\infty\) with respect to complex and real interpolation methods. Namely, if \(X\) is either \(L_\infty(M)\) or BMO\((M)\) and \(Y\) is either \(L_1(M)\) or \(H_1(M)\), then for any \(1<p<\infty\) and any \(1\leq s\leq\infty\) we have \([X, Y]_{1/p}=L_p(M)\) and \([X, Y]_{1/p,\,s}=L_{p,\,s}(M)\). The operator space versions of these results are also given. The proofs require the skillful use of operator space and Hilbert \(C^*\)-module techniques.
