Suppose \(F\) is a finite field of odd characteristic, \(G\) a finite group, \(V\) a finite-dimensional \(FG\)-module. If \(V\) carries a non-singular alternating bilinear form \(\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle\) (i.e., a symplectic form) invariant under \(G\), then we call \(V\) a symplectic \(FG\)-module. If \(S\) is an isotropic submodule of \(V\) (i.e., \(S\) is contained in \(\{t\in V\mid\langle S,t\rangle=0\}\)) satisfying moreover precisely \(S=\{t\in V\mid\langle S,t\rangle=0\}\), we call \(V\) hyperbolic (when at least one such \(S\leq V\) does indeed exist). Using this concept, it has consequences in the study of monomial characters of a finite group \(G\) (a character \(\chi\) of \(G\) is monomial when it is induced from a linear character of some subgroup of \(G\)). See for instance papers of \textit{E. C. Dade} [Math. Z. 178, 401-420 (1981; Zbl 0451.20007)], \textit{R. W. van der Waall} [Proc. Edinb. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 30, 153-167 (1987; Zbl 0601.20009)], \textit{R. W. van der Waall} and \textit{N. S. Hekster} [J. Algebra 105, 255-267 (1987; Zbl 0609.20004)], and papers of \textit{I. M. Isaacs} (see references of the paper under review). In this paper the following is proved: Theorem. Suppose \(F\) is a finite field of odd characteristic, \(G\) a finite group of odd order, \(V\) is a symplectic \(FG\)-module whose restriction \(V_N\) to a symplectic \(FN\)-module is hyperbolic for every cyclic subgroup \(N\) of \(G\). Then \(V\) is hyperbolic. The proof uses a lot of specific lemmas and propositions, all of those are stated and proved in this paper, and as such they are invaluable on their own account. The reviewer regards this paper as a substantial progression to the papers mentioned above and to the papers mentioned in the list of references of this paper.
