A new algorithm for the Petrov classification of the Weyl tensor (Q1403995)

The authors present a new algorithm for calculating the Petrov type of the Weyl tensor of a four-dimensional metric of Lorentzian signature. If some of the Newman-Penrose coefficients \(\Psi _i\) are zero, it is equivalent to the algorithm of \textit{F. W. Letniowski} and \textit{R. G. McLenaghan} [Gen. Relativ. Gravitation 20, 463--483 (1988; Zbl 0642.53078)]. However, as demonstrated by way of example runs, even in this case the authors' new Maple code is advantageous.
