Motivated by examples from classical mechanics, the authors introduce and study the notion of a Lie affalgebroid, which is an affine analog of the notion of a Lie algebroid structure on a vector bundle. The structure of a Lie affalgebroid on an affine bundle \(A\) consists of an affine Lie bracket and a morphpism \(A\to TM\) of affine bundles, together with a compatibility condition, similar to the one in the case of Lie algebroids. A Lie affalgebroid structrure on \(A\) defines a Lie algebroid structure on the corresponding vector bundle \(V(A)\) as well as the action by derivations of sections of \(A\) on sections of \(V(A)\). The authors define certain cohomology of Lie algebroids, such that the class of the above derivation in this cohomolody allows one to classify the Lie affalgebroids structures on \(A\) which have the same underlying Lie algebroid structure on \(V(A)\). The authors also construct a Lie algebroid hull of a Lie affalgebroid, and use this construction in developing the Cartan's calculus on Lie affalgebroids.
