A mapping \(f\) from a domain of \(\mathbb{R}^n\) into \(\mathbb{R}^n\) is said to be of finite distortion if \(f\) belongs to the local Sobolev space \(W^{1,1}\), the Jacobian determinant \(J(x,f)\) of \(f\) is locally integrable and \(\|f(x) \|^n \leq K(x)J(x,f)\) a.e. for some measurable a.e. finite function \(K\). If \(K\) is essentially bounded, then the local integrability of \(J(x,f)\) shows that \(f\) is quasiregular. Under exponential integrability of \(K\) it still follows that \(f\) is continuous and either a constant or a sense-preserving, discrete and open mapping, see [\textit{J. Kauhanen}, \textit{P. Koskela}, \textit{P. Maly}, J. Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 160, 135-151 (2001; Zbl 0189.09204)]. Here it is shown that under a subexponential integrability condition mapping \(f\) of finite distortion have \(J(x,f)>0\) a.e. The method of the proof differs from the original quasiregular case, [\textit{O. Martio}, \textit{S. Rickman} and \textit{J. Vaisäla}, Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn., Ser. AI 448, 1-40 (1969; Zbl 0189.09204)] is based on a local bound for the multiplicity of the mapping \(f\).
