Let \(L\) be a finite complex. There are notions of \([L]\)-homotopy equivalence and of \([L]\)-homotopy group introduced by the first author in [Daverman, R. J. (ed.) et al., Handbook of geometric topology (Elsevier, Amsterdam), 307-371 (2002; Zbl 0994.57002)]. For example, if \(L\) is the \((n+1)\)-sphere, then \([L]\)-homotopy equivalence is \(n\)-homotopy equivalence. In this paper the authors obtain a model category structure for topological spaces such that the weak equivalences are the maps inducing isomorphisms of \([L]\)-homotopy groups. They also characterise weak equivalences between certain spaces in terms of \([L]\)-homotopy groups, generalising the result that a map between CW complexes of dimension at most \(n\) is an \(n\)-homotopy equivalence if and only if it induces isomorphisms of homotopy groups in dimension less than \(n\).
