Guided by \textit{M. Barr}'s [Lect. Notes Math. 137, 39-55 (1970; Zbl 0204.33202)] description of topological spaces and continuous maps, the authors show that several topological structures and their corresponding continuous maps can be described by relaxing the notion of a monad. They show also that, under natural assumptions, categories of lax algebras for a lax extension of a monad in \({\mathcal X}\) are topological over \({\mathcal X}\). By extending the construction of \textit{E. G. Manes} [General Topology Appl. 4, 341-360 (1974; Zbl 0289.54003)], they construct the reflection of a reflexive and transitive lax algebra with respect to a lax monad into the corresponding category of algebras for the monad.
