Let \(C(T,X)\) denote the space of continuous bounded functions from a topological space \(T\) into a real normed space \(X\), endowed with the uniform norm. The authors study the extremal structure of the unit ball \(B_{C(T,X)}\) of \(C(T,X)\) looking for the conditions under which each function in \(B_{C(T,X)}\) can be expressed as the mean of two extreme functions. They give such conditions (in terms of properties of \(X\) and properties of the set \(E_{C(T,X)}\) of extreme points of \(B_{C(T,X)}\)) for \(X\) being a strictly convex normed space. Combining this result and some of its consequences with some earlier results by the first three authors of this paper [J. Approx. Theory 97, 15-30 (1999; Zbl 0951.41016)], the authors give a characterization of \(F\)-spaces with some additional properties: a compact \(T_2\) space \(T\) is an \(F\)-space of dimension \(\dim T \leq 1\) iff for each two-dimensional strictly convex normed space \(X\) it holds that \(B_{C(T,X)}= \frac 12(E_{C(T,X)} + E_{C(T,X)})\). Recall that a space \(T\) is an \(F\)-space if each its cozero-set is \(C^*\)-embedded in \(T\).
