The nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation \((\partial_{tt}- \Delta_x+ \varepsilon^\sigma)u= u^2+ g(u)\), \(t\geq 0\), \(\sigma= \text{const}> 0\), \(x\in \mathbb{R}^2\), with compactly supported and \(\varepsilon> 0\) small initial data \(u_0\), \(u_1\) is studied in this paper. The nonlinearity is of cubic type, i.e. \(g(s)= O(| s|^3)\) near \(s=0\). The author proves that for each integer \(k\geq 18\) and for each \(0< \sigma(k)<{2\over k+10}\) there exists \(\varepsilon_0= \varepsilon_0(\sigma(k),\| u_0\|_{H^{k+16}},\| u_1\|_{H^{k+15}})> 0\) such that for every \(\varepsilon\in (0,\varepsilon_0]\) the above mentioned Cauchy problem admits a unique global solution \(u\in \bigcap^{k+16}_{j= 0} C^j([0, \infty); H^{k+ 16-j}(\mathbb{R}^2))\). The proof relies on Shatah normal forms method and on appropriate \(L^\infty\)-\(L_2\) and \(L_2\)-\(L_2\) a priori estimates.
