Let \(C\) be a curve in \(\mathbb{P}^n\) (i.e. a closed subscheme of \(\mathbb{P}^n\) which is locally Cohen-Macaulay and of pure dimension one), defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and assume that \(C\) is non-degenerate. In this work, the author determines bounds for \(h^1({\mathcal I}_C(j))\) and \(h^2({\mathcal I}_C(j))\), for all \(j \in \mathbb{Z}\), assuming that \(C\) has degree \(d \geq 3\). As a consequence he obtains a bound for the (arithmetic) genus \(g\) of \(C\), which is \(g \leq { d-2 \choose 2} - (n - 3)\). Moreover, he is able to show that a non-degenerate curve in \(\mathbb{P}^n\) can have every genus up to that bound. The author defines \(C\) to be an ``extremal'' curve if \(h^1({\mathcal I}_C(j))\) attains the bound obtained at the beginning of the paper, for all \(j \in \mathbb{Z}\). He then proves that for any given degree \(d \geq 2\) and any possible genus there is an extremal curve having those degree and genus. He also determines the Hartshorne-Rao module, the generic ideal and the graded Betti numbers of an extremal curve.
