A group is called capable if it is isomorphic to some quotient group \(H/Z(H)\). The authors use non-Abelian tensor squares to decide whether a \(p\)-group of nilpotency class two is capable or not. To this aim first the epicenters of two-generator groups are determined where \(p\neq 2\) (Theorem 4.2). For groups with more generators a necessary condition for capability is given: If \(\{a_1,\dots,a_k\}\) is a minimal generating set of \(G\) and \(o(a_i)\geq o(a_{i+1})\) for all \(i\), then \(o(a_1)=o(a_2)\) if \(p\neq 2\) and \(G\) is capable (Theorem 4.4). In contrast to the situation in Abelian groups, this condition is not sufficient.
