The first 160 pages of the book is a modern presentation of the traditional course on linear algebra, and another 210 pages are devoted to interesting further topics. The book is addressed to mathematicians and physicists. An introductory Chapter 0 states the prerequisites (complex numbers, vectors in \(\mathbb{R}^n\), scalar products, vector products). The actual material treats the basics on groups, rings, fields, vector spaces, and continues with matrix algebra and its applications to linear systems, determinants and the eigenvalue problem, bilinear forms, orthogonal groups and unitary spaces, and, finally, Jordan's normal form. These five chapters on the usual topics are continued with an extensive Chapter 6 on geometric applications (conic sections, quadratic surfaces, ruled surfaces, quadrics, and the basics of projective geometry). Tensor calculus (tensor products of vector spaces, alternative forms, etc.) is systematically discussed using categories and functors. This is followed by linear groups (and their use in connection with affine spaces, the Gauss elimination, decompositions of Iwasawa and Jordan-Chevalley) and Lie algebras. Quaternions are discussed along with orthogonal groups. This includes symplectic groups along with orthogonal groups and the Lorentz group. The last chapter concerns rings and modules. -- The presentation is very readable. The content of the book is enriched by a large number of problems. Solutions are not given, and there seems to be no instructor's manual with solutions.
