The article is devoted to a case study of data on wave impacts on ships. The data were obtained from physical model studies for different models of bulk carriers and a broad range of sea and ship conditions. The generalized Pareto distribution (GDP) is used to describe the distribution of wave impact pressures exceeding some threshold and a Poisson process for the number of such impacts. The parameter estimation technique is described. A structure of dependence of impacts on different hatches is investigated. It was found that GDP provides a very good representation of the distribution of large impact pressures and that the shape parameter of GDP is independent of the variations in the wave and ship conditions.
