Consider the system \[ \dot x(t)=f(x(t),u(t)), \quad u \in \mathcal U, \] where \(\mathcal U\) denotes the set of all piecewise continuous functions taking values in the compact subset \(U\) of \(\mathbb R^m\) and \(f: \mathbb R^d \times \mathbb R^m \to \mathbb R^d\) is \(C^1\). Let \(x_0\) be an equilibrium point corresponding to a control parameter \(u_0 \in\text{int}\,U\); that is, \(f (x_0, u_0) = 0\). It is assumed that the linearized system \[ \dot x(t) = \partial_1 f(x_0, u_0)x(t) + \partial_2 f(x_0, u_0)u(t) \] is controllable. The notions of control set and of local control set are defined and discussed. The main result shows that the hyperbolicity of \(\partial_1 f(x_0, u_0)\) (a matrix is hyperbolic if none of its eigenvalues has zero real part) guarantees the uniqueness of the local control sets.
