The mathematical methods described in this book are based on applications of interpolation theory in Banach spaces to linear operator theory and are used for studying nonclassical problems in mathematical physics. Problems of this type involve equations with noninvertible operators for which generalised resolvents, semigroups with kernels or special decomposition techniques for the operator are used. The first chapter is devoted to basics of the theory of linear operators in indefinite inner product spaces: Krein spaces, J-dissipative and J-selfadjoint operators, interpolation results in Banach and Hilbert spaces. The chapter ends with results regarding the solvability of the Cauchy problem for first order operator-differential equations. The spectral theory for linear-selfadjoint pencils is presented in Chapter 2. The author shows that under certain conditions the eigenelements and associated elements of such a pencil define a Riesz basis for some special spaces. Chapter 3 is devoted to elliptic eigenvalue problems with an indefinite weight function. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the Riesz basis property, interpolation of weighted Sobolev spaces and sufficient conditions for the Riesz basis property are presented. The results of Chapters 1-3 are applied in Chapter 4 to nonclassical problems for first and second order operator-differential equations. This kind of problems arises in domains such as kinetic theory, transport theory, population dynamics, among others. The author's own results are included in Chapter 1 and Chapter 4. The References section contains a large list of articles on the subject, many of them belonging to the author. The book is carefully written, technical, and can be used by scientists and graduate students.
