The authors consider domain decomposition methods for solving systems of algebraic equations arising after the mortar finite element discretization on nonmatching meshes of second order elliptic problems with discontinuous coefficients. Two variants of the addititive nonoverlapping Schwarz method are presented. The first method is an extension of the average Schwarz method developed by \textit{P. E. Bjørstad, M. Dryja} and \textit{E. Vainikko} [Domain Decomp. Meth. in Sci. and Eng., 141--157 (1996; MR 1943457)] for conforming finite elements to the mortar case. The second method is based on an idea proposed by Bjørstad and Dryja about the coarse spaces used. Both methods are very well suited for parallel computations. It is shown that the condition number of the preconditioned system of each method is proportional to the ratio of the mesh sizes and it is independent of the jumps of the coefficients. The results from some numerical experiments, which are presented in the paper, confirm the theoretical results obtained by the authors.
