The author studies \(p\)-brane mechanics, which is defined by an action of the form \(A = \int{ \| \eta \|^{1/2}L}\,d\sigma\) where \(\eta_{ij} = g_{\mu \nu}x^{\mu}_{,i} x^{\nu}_{,j}\) is a metric in a \(d\)-dimensional ``space-time'' manifold with background coordinates \(x^{\mu}\) , which are considered as functions of the internal coordinates \(\sigma^i\), \(i= 0,1,\dots, p\), \(d>p\) and \(L\) is a scalar function of a set of field components \(q^A(\sigma^i)\) (including background coordinates \(x^{\mu}\)) and their derivatives \(q^A_{,i}\) with respect to \(\sigma^i\). Generalizing the covariant canonical (i.e. symplectic) formulation of relativistic field theories, the author proposed such a formulation for \(p\)-brane mechanics. The general procedure is illustrated by an application to the case of Dirac-Goto-Nambu type \(p\)-brane, i.e. a brane on which there are no internal fields.
