Let \(G\) be a finite group and \(\mathbb{F}\) be an algebraically closed field of finite characteristic \(p\). The ordinary cohomology of groups depends only on the principal block of the group ring. \textit{M. Linckelmann} gave [in Algebr. Represent. Theory 2, No. 2, 107-135 (1999; Zbl 0934.16010)] a well working definition of the group cohomology \(H^*(G,b)\) of a block \(b\) of a group ring as sub-object of the group cohomology of the defect group \(D\). Moreover, Linckelmann showed there that there is an injective ring homomorphism \(\gamma_b\) from the group cohomology of the block to the Hochschild cohomology of the block. In addition \textit{M. Linckelmann} introduced [in J. Algebra 215, No. 2, 460-480 (1999; Zbl 0960.20008)] the cohomology variety of a block as the maximal ideal spectrum of \(H^*(G,b)/I_{G,b}(U)\) where \(U\) is a bounded complex of \(\mathbb{F} G\)-modules and \(I_{G,b}\) is the kernel of the mapping induced by \(\gamma_b\) followed by tensor product with \(U\). This extends J.~Carlson's varieties for ordinary group cohomology. In the present paper the author shows that \(I_{G,b}(U)\) is the intersection of \(H^*(G,b)\) with \(I_D(bU)\). Moreover, the author proves that for Abelian defect group \(D\) and an indecomposable \(b\)-module \(U\) with vertex \(D\), the variety of \(U\) and the variety of the Green correspondent with respect to the Brauer correspondent block in the normalizer of \(D\) are equal. Finally, the author shows that for a central \(p\)-subgroup \(Z\) of \(G\) and a bounded complex \(U\) of \(G/Z\)-modules the quotient mapping factoring modulo \(Z\) induces an affine map of the variety of \(U\) as \(G\)-module in the block \(b\) to the variety of \(U\) as \(G/Z\)-module in the corresponding block. The proof consists of a very fine analysis of the modular representation theory involved in each step.
