    The author deals with the existence and the uniqueness of standing waves \(\phi_\omega(x) e^{i\omega t}\) (\(x\in\mathbb{R}^2\), \(t\geq 0\)) for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (stated below). They satisfy the equation \[ \Delta\phi- 2\phi h'(|\phi|^2) \Delta(h(|\phi|^2))+ \phi g(|\phi|^2)- 2\omega\phi= 0, \] where \(g\), \(h\) are given real functions and \(\omega\) is a parameter. The ground states \(\phi\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^2)\) minimize the action \[ S_\omega(\phi)= {1\over 2} \int (|\nabla\varphi|^2- |\nabla(h(|\phi|^2))|^2- G(|\phi|^2))\,dx+ \omega\int |\phi|^2\,dx \] (\(G= \int^t_0 g\,ds\)). The stability result concerns the solution \(u(x,t)= \phi_\omega e^{i\omega t}\) of the Schrödinger equation \[ 2iu_t+ \Delta u- 2uh'(| u|^2) \Delta(h(| u|^2))+ ug(| u|^2)= 0 \] and ensures the control over the value \(F(| u|)\), where \[ F(t)= \int^t_0 (1- 4\rho^2 h^{\prime 2}(\rho^2))^{1/2} d\rho. \] The method of \textit{T. Cazenave} and \textit{P.-L. Lions} [Commun. Math. Phys. 85, 549--561 (1982; Zbl 0513.35007)] is employed.
