Consider the asymptotics for the eigenvalues of the Sturm-Liouville equation \(-u''+ qy={\lambda}ry\), \(t\in(0,l)\), subject to boundary conditions \(y(0)\cos{\alpha(0)}=y'(0)\sin{\alpha(0)}\), \(y(l)\cos{\alpha(l)}=y'(l)\sin{\alpha(l)}\), where \(q\) is in \(L^1\) and \(r\) is positive on \((0,a)\), negative on \((a,l)\) and sufficiently regular. The asymptotics are given in the form \(\zeta{s_{n}}=A+B+n\times\pi+O(n^{-\eta})\), with \(\zeta=\int^{a}_{0}{\sqrt{r}}\), \(s_{n}=\sqrt{\lambda_{n}}\), \(\lambda_{n}\) being the \(n\)th eigenvalue. The values of \(A\), \(B\) and of \(\eta>0\) depend on \(\alpha(0)\) and on the limits \(r(a^+)\) and \(r(a^-)\). Consider also boundary value problems on \([0,a]\) with \(\lambda\) dependent boundary conditions at \(a\) so that the eigenvalues approximate the eigenvalues of the original Sturm-Liouville problem. The proofs rely on the properties of modified Prüfer angle.
