In this paper, the Gross-Neveu model, a \(1+1\) dimensional model of quantum field theory, is examined at finite temperatures and at next to leading order in the \(1/N\) expansion. Within this accuracy, the effective potential is calculated to get an expression which is invariant under renormalization group transformations. The cancellation of ultraviolet divergences takes place at finite temperatures without the need for introducing counterterms beyond of those of the zero temperature in this approximation. The authors also discuss how the \(1/N\) expansion breaks down for temperatures below some \(T_c\).
