The article is devoted to proving the existence of a unique solution of the Cauchy problem \[ u_t= \Delta\log u,\quad u > 0, \quad \text{in } \mathbb R^2\times (0,T), \] \[ u(x,0)= u_0(x), \quad x\in \mathbb R^2, \] where \(u_0\) satisfies either the conditions \(u_0(x)\leq C\min(1,1/(| x| \log | x| )^2)\), or the condition \(u_0 \in L^p(\mathbb R^2)\cap L^1(\mathbb R^2)\), \(p > 1\), for the function \(u_0\) with the compact support. The author shows that there exists a unique solution to the problem which satisfies the condition \[ \frac{\log u(x,t)}{\log r}\to - f(t) \] uniformly in \([a,b]\) as \(r = | x| \to \infty\), \(0 < a < b < T\) for \(f\in C([0,\infty])\) with \(f \geq 2\) on \([0,\infty)\) and \[ \int_{\mathbb R^2}u(x,t)\,dx = \int_{\mathbb R^2}u_0\,dx - 2\pi \int_0^tf\,ds,\quad 0 \leq t \leq T \] where \(T\) is given by \[ 2\pi\int_0^Tf\,ds = \int_{\mathbb R^2}u_0\,dx. \] Moreover, any solution obtained as the limit of solutions of certain Dirichlet problems in bounded domains satisfies the same decay condition and is hence unique.
