The paper is concerned with the second-order Hamiltonian system \[ \begin{aligned}\ddot{u}(t) & =\nabla F(t,u(t))\qquad{\text{a.e. in }}[0,T],\\ u(0)-u(T) & =\dot{u}(0)-\dot{u}(T)=0, \end{aligned} \] where \(T>0,\) and \(F\) satisfies certain assumptions. Let \(H_{T}^{1}\) denote a Hilbert space of functions \(u:[0,T]\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^{N}\) which are absolutely continuous, \(\dot{u}\in L^{2}(0,T;\mathbb{R}^{N}),\) and satisfy \(u(0)=u(T).\) Using the least action principle and minimax methods from critical point theory, the authors prove six theorems which establish either existence of at least one solution \(u\in H_{T}^{1},\) or existence of at least three distinct solutions in \(H_{T}^{1}.\)
