The author constructs a new multiplier Hopf (*-)algebra from two multiplier Hopf (*-)algebras by taking a twisted tensor product of the underlying algebras, and then finding sufficient conditions on the twist map such that the natural comultiplication makes it into a multiplier Hopf (*-)algebra. Integrals for the twisted product are described in terms of the integrals of the two components. The Drinfeld double multiplier Hopf algebra is constructed in this framework. For usual Hopf algebras, Majid's double crossed product of a matched pair of Hopf algebras is such a twisted tensor product with respect to a certain twist map.
