Fix an algebraically closed field \(k\), a totally real field \(K\) of degree \(f\) with maximal order \(O_K\) and positive integers \(g\) and \(d\). Let \({\mathcal A}^{O_K}_{g,d}\) denote the moduli stack of abelian varieties of dimension \(g\) over \(k\) with a polarization of degree \(d^2\) and an action of \(O_K\), compatible with the polarization. It is called a Hilbert-Siegel moduli space. Special cases are the Siegel moduli spaces \((K= \mathbb{Q})\) and the Hilbert moduli varieties \((f= g)\). The main result of the paper is the following theorem: Suppose the polarization is mildly inseparable. Then \({\mathcal A}^{O_K}_{g,d}\) is a local complete intersection of dimension \(\geq {g\over 2}\) \(({g\over f}+ 1)\) in which the ordinary points are dense. Moreover its singular locus is described via the Dieudonné module. The proof is via deformation theory using Dieudonné theory and crystalline cohomology.
