The paper is a survey of results, most of which were obtained by Robba, Christol, and the author, regarding \(p\)-adic differential equations whose holomorphic solutions exists on wider regions than solutions of generic equations. Equations possessing such overconvergence properties have a rich algebraic structure and appear in various geometric frameworks, some of which (Galois representations, cohomology of algebraic varieties) are also surveyed in the paper. For another recent survey of these and related topics, see [\textit{Y. André}, Period mappings and differential equations. From \({\mathbb C}\) to \({\mathbb C}_p\). MSJ Memoirs. 12. (Tokyo: Mathematical Society of Japan) (2003; Zbl 1029.14006)].
