Consider the Liénard system \[ \dot x= y- F(x),\qquad\dot y= x.\tag{\(*\)} \] The author proves that to any natural number \(k\) there is a natural number \(n> 2\) satisfying \([{n-1\over 2}]\geq k\) such that the Liénard system \((*)\), where \(F\) is a polynomial of degree \(n\), has \(k\) large amplitude limit cycles obtained by successive bifurcations from infinity. He also shows that there are polynomials \(F\) of degree \(n\) such that \((*)\) has \(k\) small amplitude limit cycles obtained by successive bifurcations from the origin and \([{n-1\over 2}]-k\) large amplitude limit cycles. Finally, the author establishes an analytic Liénard system with a unique equilibrium and infinitely many limit cycles.
