A new approach to the analysis of the impedance problem for the Helmholtz equation in the exterior of a body in two and three dimensions is proposed. An additional boundary is introduced inside the scattering body. An appropriate boundary condition is specified on the additional boundary. The solution is obtained in the form of a single layer potential on the whole boundary. It is shown that the method of hypersingular integral equations widely used in the scattering theory is more complicated and has several shortcomings in comparison to the author's approach.
