Let \(M\) be a compact complex manifold equipped with a Hermitian metric. Let \(L\) be a holomorphic line bundle over \(M\) equipped with a unitary fiber metric. One says \(L\) is quasipositive if its curvature is nonnegative everywhere and strictly positive at some point. Let \(\Delta_k:=\overline{\partial}^*\overline {\partial}\) on \(C^\infty(\otimes^kL)\) be the complex Laplacian with values in \(L\) and let \(\lambda(M,L^k)\) be the smallest positive eigenvalue of that operator. \textit{Y. T. Siu} [Lect. Notes Math. 1111, 169--192 (1985; Zbl 0577.32032)] formulated the following conjecture in 1984: {Conjecture: If \(L\) is quasipositive, then \(\inf_{k>0}\lambda(M,L^k)>0\).} The author establishes the conjecture under certain additional assumptions, for example if \(L\) is quasipositive and also admits a positive metric or if \(M\) is a Riemann surface. The author shows, however, that the conjecture fails in general by providing a suitable counterexample. The analysis proceeds by reformulating the problem in terms of the CR geometry on the dual circle bundle.
