{Let \(G=GL_n\) be the general linear group over a non-Archimedean local field \(F\), and let \(T\) be the subgroup of \(G\) consisting of all diagonal matrices. Denote by \({\mathcal O}_F\) the ring of integers of \(F\), and let \(K:=GL_n({\mathcal O}_F)\) be the maximal compact subgroup of \(G\). A theorem of Satake asserts that there is a canonical isomorphism between the Hecke algebras with complex coefficients \(S\colon{\mathcal H}(G,K)\to{\mathcal H}(T,T\cap K)^W\), where \(W=N(T)/T\) is the Weil group. Recently M. Rapoport and T. Haines described the matrix \(|c_{ij}|\) expressing the Satake isomorphism \(S\) with respect to some natural bases [see \textit{M. Rapoport}, Manuscr. Math. 101, 153-166 (2000; Zbl 0941.22006), and \textit{Th. Haines}, Manuscr. Math. 101, 167-174 (2000; Zbl 0941.22007)]. The main result of Rapoport's paper asserts (under very general assumptions) that ``not-obviously zero'' entries \(c_{ij}\) below the diagonal are in fact positive. The author of the paper under review gives a completely different proof (which is algorithmic and elementary) of Rapoport's result in the case when \(G\) is the general linear group}.
