The authors discuss the numerical solution of a singularly perturbed boundary value problem, namely, a singularly perturbed elliptic reaction-diffusion problem in two dimensions, with strongly anisotropic coefficients and line interface. Moreover, the second order derivative with respect to \(x\) is multiplied by a small parameter. Such type of problems represent linear models in fluid dynamics, chemistry etc. and also a basic model of singularly perturbation problems. A finite-volume first order difference scheme is presented and uniform convergence of this scheme, in discrete maximum norm, is proved, based on a special mesh: uniform with respect to \(y\) and partially uniform (Shishkin mesh) with respect to \(x\). Two numerical examples are performed that agree with theoretical results.
