Spectral boundary conditions were first introduced by Atiyah, Patodi, and Singer in their analysis of the index theorem for manifolds with boundary. The author imposes quite general spectral boundary conditions for suitably chosen second order partial differential operators, studies the associated heat kernels, establishes the existence of heat trace expansions and meromorphic zeta functions with quite general smearing operators, and analyzes the leading logarithmic and non-local terms. Stability results for the residue at \(s=0\) are examined.
