The Martin compactification was constructed in order to allow an integral representation for all positive harmonic functions. However, it was discovered that the Martin boundary may have irregularities with respect to the Dirichlet problem. \textit{P. A. Loeb} [Isr. J. Math. 25, 154--187 (1976; Zbl 0346.31007)] constructed a new compactification that in general is better than the Martin boundary for solving the Dirichlet problem; of course, on this new boundary only some positive harmonic functions do possess an integral representation. The present paper is devoted to a study of these functions. The framework is that of harmonic spaces in the sense of Constantinescu-Cornea. A positive harmonic function is called sturdy if it is the uniform limit on compact sets of a sequence of (positive) bounded harmonic functions. The paper includes an appendix by P. Loeb and H. von Weizsäcker on the existence of Zero-Set Mappings.
