The author constructs three merit functions associated with the generalized variational inequality. Note that if the function \(f\) is the indicator function of a closed convex set \(K\) in \(H\), then the generalized inequality reduces to a problem considered and studied by \textit{M. A. Noor} [``Quasi variational inequalities'', Appl. Math. Lett. 1, 367--370 (1988; Zbl 0708.49015)]. Using the regularized-gap function and D-gap function associated with the generalized variational inequality, some error bounds are obtained. All these results are new ones. Since the generalized variational inequalities include the classical variational inequalities and the generalized complementarity problems as special cases, results proved in this paper continue to hold for these problems.
