As a relation between functionals on the space of solutions of Euler-Lagrange equation in a certain classical field theory, the authors formulate the master Ward identity (MWI), which was originally introduced as a renormalization condition in perturbative quantum field theory. They give a self-contained treatment of Peierls' definition of Poisson bracket, and use it in this formulation. The quantization procedure can be introduced so as to maintain symmetries expressed by MWI of the classical field theory. Applications to BRS symmetric field theories are discussed.
