The author uses the asymptotic perturbation (AP) method for the theory of approximate analytic solutions to the Klein-Gordon equation with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. The AP method is able to calculate with excellent precision the behaviour of the solution in the case of primary resonance with a generic mode. Here no assumptions are made a priori on the spatial dependence of the motion. The AP method derives a system of nonlinear model equations describing the modulation of the amplitude and of the phase of the oscillation. Numerical results are presented which demonstrate the validity of the AP method.
