This paper extends the applicability of Israel's thin shell formalism to singular shells embedded in a non-vacuum universe. To this end, a Schwarzschild mass is embedded into a general Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime using curvature coordinates. Building on earlier work by \textit{R. Gautreau} [Newton's absolute time and space in general relativity, Am. J. Phys. 68, No. 4, 350--366 (2000)], Israel's formalism is generalized to cover singular shells in a Schwarzschild/FLRW background.
