\textit{J. H. Palmieri} [Ann. Math. 149, 421--449 (1999; Zbl 0932.55021)] gave a complete description of the cohomology of the Steenrod algebra modulo nilpotent elements. In particular he described several families of explicit elements in this cohomology modulo nilpotents. These elements are monomials in the generators of a bigraded ring \[ {\mathbb{Z}_2}[h_{ts} \mid s < t] / (h_{ts}h_{uv} \mid u \leq s), \] that are invariant under the total squaring oparation. An \(s\)-polynomial is a sum of monomials for which none of the summands is an invariant monomial. These polynomials can be filtered by the number of factors in each monomial. The author of the paper under review shows that there are no invariant \(s\)-polynomials in filtration 2, 3, or 4. The paper gives families of invariant \(s\)-polynomials in filtrations 5, 6, and 7. The author conjectures that these are the only \(s\)-invariant polynomials in filtration less than or equal to 7. The author has verified this conjecture using a Maple program (not supplied) up to certain degrees in each filtration.
