This is an excellent book on population genetics and evolution placing the emphasis on mathematical and statistical aspects of the theory. It is the first of a planned two-volume sequence and covers the more introductory aspects of the theory. The second volume then is intended to contain a far more extensive description of the theory of molecular population genetics as well as connections between evolutionary genetics and human genetics and bioinformatics. This first volume is based on the author's meanwhile classic edition from 1979, see the review Zbl 0422.92011. On the one hand, this book covers the deterministic and stochastic theory (including diffusion theory) of classical population genetics, sometimes with new aspects such as a revised interpretation of the Fundamental Theorem of Natural Selection. On the other hand, new chapters reflecting the development of the theory of molecular population genetics over the last 25 years have been added, e.g., an introduction to Kingman's coalescent process and a chapter on testing the neutral theory. In particular, the author successfully connects the classical prospective theory with the current retrospective viewpoint of population genetics. In conclusion, this is an exciting and significant book which reflects the author's enthusiasm and experience in the field through many decades. It should be read by graduate students and researchers interested in mathematical aspects of population genetics and interested in statistical methods of analyzing genetical data.
