Let \(L_a^p\), \(1<p<\infty\), be the Bergman space on the unit disk \(D\). For \(z \in D\), set \(\varphi_z(w)=(z-w)/(1-\overline{z}w)\) and define the operator \(U_zf=(f\circ \varphi_z)\cdot \varphi_z'\), which is bounded on \(L_a^p\) and unitary on \(L_a^2\). Let \(S_z=U_zSU_z\). Given a bounded operator \(S\) on \(L_a^p\), denote by \(\widetilde{S}(z)\), \(z \in D\), its Berezin transform, and let \(\widetilde{f}\) be the Berezin transform of the Toeplitz operator \(T_f\). The main results of the paper are as follows. Theorem 1.1. Suppose that \(1<p<\infty\) and \(S\) is a bounded operator on \(L_a^p\) such that \[ \sup_{z \in D} \| S_z1\| _m < \infty, \quad \sup_{z \in D} \| S_z^*1\| _m < \infty \] for some \(m>3/((p_1-1)\), where \(p_1=\max\{p, p'\}\). Then \(S\) is compact on \(L_a^p\) if and only if \(\widetilde{S}(z) \to 0\) as \(z \to \partial D\). Theorem 1.3. Suppose that \(1<p<\infty\) and \(S\) is a finite sum of operators of the form \(T_{f_1}\dots T_{f_n}\), where each \(f_j\) has a bounded Berezin transform. Then \(S\) is compact on \(L_a^p\) if and only if \(\widetilde{S}(z) \to 0\) as \(z \to \partial D\).
