Let \(G\) be a locally compact abelian group, \({\mathcal F}_G\) the Fourier transform of functions on \(G\), and \(T\) a linear bounded operator between Banach spaces. \(T\) has Fourier type \(p\) with respect to \(G\) for some \(p\in [1,2]\) if there exists a constant \(c\) such that the Hausdorff-Young type inequality \[ \| T ({\mathcal F}_G f) \,| \,L_{p'}^Y(G) \| \leq c \| f \,| \,L_{p}^X(G) \| \] holds for any function \(f\) in the Bochner-Lebesgue space \(L_{p}^X(G)\). The authors prove that if \(G\) is second countable and \(H\) is a closed discrete subgroup of \(G\), then any operator of Fourier type \(p\) with respect to \(G\) has also Fourier type \(p\) with respect to \(H\). In the case \(p=2\), they recover the result of the reviewer [Arch. Math. 77, 323--327 (2001; Zbl 1006.47053)] that any operator of Fourier type \(2\) with respect to the real line has Fourier type 2 with respect to the Walsh-Fourier transform. It was recently shown by \textit{M. Piotrowski} and the reviewer [Math. Nachr. 276, 57--62 (2004; Zbl 1113.47301)] that Fourier type \(2\) with respect to the real line even implies Fourier type 2 with respect to any locally compact abelian group.
