In this paper it is proved that the initial-value problem for the transport equation \[ \begin{aligned} & \frac{\partial u}{\partial t}+a(x)\cdot \nabla u=0,\quad (t,x)\in (0,T]\times \mathbb{R}^n,\\ & u(0,x)=f(x),\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^n,\end{aligned} \] admits a unique continuous viscosity solution under certain conditions which do not exclude the case of discontinuous mappings \(a\). In fact, the author does not confine the investigations to the linear transport equation but derives an existence-uniqueness result for the possibly nonlinear Hamilton-Jacobi equation \[ \begin{aligned} & \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} + H (x,\nabla u) = 0,\quad (t,x)\in (0, T]\times \mathbb{R}^n,\\ & u(0,x)=f(x),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^n,\end{aligned} \] where the Hamiltonian \(H(x,p)\) may be discontinuous in \(x\).
