Let \(U_q({\mathfrak g})\) be a quantum group associated with a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra \({\mathfrak g}\) and let \(V(\lambda)\) denote the irreducible highest weight \(U_q({\mathfrak g})\)-module with a dominant integral highest weight \(\lambda\). One of the most interesting problems in crystal basis theory is to find an explicit realization of the crystal graph \({\mathcal B}(\lambda)\) of \(V(\lambda)\), called the \textit{irreducible highest weight crystal} with \textit{highest weight} \(\lambda\). In [''Crystal bases for quantum affine algebras and combinatorics of Young walls'', Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 86, 29--69 (2003; Zbl 1030.17013)], \textit{S.-J. Kang} introduced the notion of \textit{Young walls} as a new combinatorial scheme for realizing the crystal graph for quantum affine algebras. The Young walls consist of colored blocks with various shapes that are built on a given \textit{ground state wall}, and they can be viewed as generalizations of colored Young diagrams. For the classical quantum affine algebras of type \(A_{n}^{(1)}\) (\(n\geq 1\)), \(A_{2n-1}^{(2)}\) (\(n\geq 3\)), \(D_n^{(1)}\) (\(n\geq 4)\)), \(A_{2n}^{(2)}\) (\(n\geq 1\)), \(D_{n+1}^{(2)}\) (\(n\geq 2\)), and \(B_{n}^{(1)}\) (\(n\geq 3\)), the crystal graphs \({\mathcal B}(\lambda)\) of the basic representations were realized as the affine crystals consisting of \textit{reduced proper Young walls}. In the present paper, the authors develop the combinatorics of Young walls for the quantum affine algebras \(U_q(C_n^{(1)})\) (\(n\geq 2\)) and give a realization of crystal graphs \({\mathcal B}(\lambda)\) for the basic representations as the sets of reduced proper Young walls. The notion of \textit{splitting blocks} plays a crucial role in the construction of crystal graphs.
