Rational cubic splines with only linear denominators are used to approximate univariate functions on intervals. Special attention is given to controlling the convexity/concavity of the curve by way of stating conditions on the parameters of the curve. These conditions are necessary and sufficient and are expressed by certain inequalities. Error estimates for the approximations obtained are given too. Several examples are provided to show the usefulness of the analysis.
