A gap in the Hausdorff dimension within the first Heisenberg group may occur when computed with respect to the Euclidean metric or the Heisenberg metric. Precise results are given in this paper in terms of \(\alpha\)-dimensional Hausdorff measures \({\mathcal H}_E\) and \({\mathcal H}_H\). It turns out that, for \(\alpha\geq 0\), both \({\mathcal H}_H^ {2\alpha}\) and \({\mathcal H}_H^{\alpha+1}\) are absolutely continuous with respect to \({\mathcal H}_E^\alpha\), whereas \({\mathcal H}_E^{\alpha}\) and \({\mathcal H}_E^{1+{\alpha /2}}\) are absolutely continuous with respect to \({\mathcal H}_H^{\alpha}\). In fact, delicate examples are constructed that establish the sharpness of the above gap estimates (\(\varepsilon\)-sharpness in the case \(2\leq \alpha <4\)). The results are further applied to compare Euclidean rectifiability and a suitable definition of rectifiability in the Heisenberg group in codimension one introduced in [\textit{B. Franchi, R. Serapioni} and \textit{F. Serra Cassano}, Math. Ann. 321, No.~3, 479--531 (2001; Zbl 1057.49032)].
